It’s the season for giving…and starting over?

A reindeer farm without Santa wouldn’t be Christmas in Marissa Gray’s Alaskan hometown. Luckily Chris Allen’s there to pinch-hit, although for Marissa, seeing her ex-fiancé again brings back memories of what might have been.

Ten years after their breakup, the feelings between the wildlife biologist and blue-eyed fisherman are stronger than ever. Only now there’s a foster kid in the mix, as well as the shocking crime that cost Marissa her job and her family’s security. She and Chris need to find their way to a meeting of minds and hearts to make this truly a season for second chances…

Excerpt

“Why don’t these reindeer fly?”

“They haven’t had their special flying food yet. Flying takes a lot of energy, so I don’t give them the food until we have the sleigh all loaded and ready to go.”

“How can you go to every house in one night?” The boy who asked was maybe three or four years older than Ryan. He’d obviously been drilled not to spoil it for the younger kids, but he couldn’t resist poking holes in the theory.

Chris winked at him. “It all has to do with the space-time continuum. There’s some high-level science involved. Honestly, I don’t understand it all, but an elf of mine is a theoretical physicist, and she’s got it worked out.”

One of the girls piped up. “That elf lady that was holding the reindeer?”

“No, Elf Marissa is an animal specialist. She knows how to keep the reindeer happy and healthy.”

“I thought elves made toys.”

“Yes, some of them do, but there’s a lot more than just toy-making going on at Santa’s workshop.”

Marissa came out and gave him the nod. Chris waved in acknowledgment. “Well, kids, we have to go now. It’s time to get these two home to the North Pole so we can head out tonight.”

“Bye, Santa. I’ll leave you a cookie.”

“Thank you. I love cookies. Merry Christmas, everyone. Ho, ho, ho.”

He followed Marissa into the back of the trailer, where they secured the reindeer. Chris shut the gate and waved a final goodbye to the kids. “You want me to drive down?”

“I’d appreciate it.” Marissa climbed into the passenger seat.

Chris checked his mirrors to make sure all the kids were accounted for, and pulled out of the driveway. Marissa waved until they were out of sight.

“So, I guess that’s it for this year.” He shifted into a lower gear and the truck rumbled down the road.

“I guess so. The family was pleased. Gave us a big tip.”

“Good. Any news about Oliver’s transplant?”

“Nothing yet.” She sounded discouraged. Chris wished he knew what to say to cheer her up, but other than offering his heart to Oliver, he couldn’t think of anything.

He weaved his way down the steep road. As the sun set, twinkling Christmas lights appeared out of the gloom. The yard display in front of one of the houses lit up, almost blinding him with the sudden brilliance of a thousand colored lights. No vehicles were behind him, so he pulled over to gaze at the spectacle. Chaser lights traced every roofline, door and window of the house. More lights covered the roof of a life-size manger scene including a sheep, a cow and a camel. Snowmen, reindeer and a couple vaguely familiar cartoon characters joined the shepherds and wise men gathering around the holy family. An angel dangled from wire stretching between two trees. The whole thing was illuminated by green floodlights that changed to purple as they watched.

“This is…” Marissa shook her head.

“Bizarre? Tacky? A massive waste of electricity?”

A grin spread across her face. “Glorious. I love the way they’ve embraced the whole Christmas theme and tied it together in an explosion of joy. I wish Ryan were here to see it.”

Chris laughed. “He’d love it.”
